William “Bill” Amory Taylor, Jr., 106, of Winfield, KS passed away Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Cumbernauld Village.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 24, 2024 at Grace Episcopal Church in Winfield. Committal with military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions for Bill may be made to the Grace Episcopal Church Endowment or Grace Episcopal Outreach Fund. Donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
Bill was born in Portage, WI to William and Zelia (Cooper) Taylor Sr. He received his education from local schools, and higher education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Bill was drafted into the Army in 1941 and was stationed at Strother Field in Winfield as a Medical Administrative Specialist, and later he was transferred to the infantry and from there to Germany. After the surrender he was sent to England where he was part of a Strategic Bombing Survey group. While stationed at Strother Field he met, and in 1944 married Suzanne “Suzy” Martin. Upon discharge from the Army and returning from overseas in 1945, Bill and Suzy made their home in Winfield where they raised their four children. Suzy passed away in 2000 after 57 years of marriage. In 2002 he married Sharon (Skinner) Shetlar, and they enjoyed 22 years together. Bill was a loyal Green Bay Packer fan. He enjoyed golf, fishing, swimming, hunting, and collecting duck decoys. He delighted in poetry and music, especially “old blues.” For many years he enjoyed being part of a morning coffee group. He was a long-time member of the Winfield Country Club, the Veterans of Foreign War and Grace Episcopal Church. Bill was a man of integrity, who loved his family, cherished his friends, and appreciated living in Winfield.
Survivors include his wife Sharon, son Martin (Theresa) Taylor, daughter Zelia (Randal) McDowell, his daughter-in-law Marilyn Taylor, his son-in-law Brad Pfeifley, grandchildren Adriene Taylor Marks, Stephen (Carey) Taylor, Taylor (Noelle) McDowell, Grant (Kieran)McDowell, and Alexandra McDowell, great-grandchildren Jack Marks, Katherine Marks, Schorr Taylor, William Taylor, Magdalena McDowell, Hanorah McDowell. Sharon’s family Robert (Alison) Shetlar, Shannon Shetlar Ryan, Melanie and Jaymin Lapointe, Ben Ryan, and great-grandchildren Levi and Miles Lapointe.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, wife Suzanne, daughter Alexandra Pfeifley, son William A. Taylor III, brothers Clayton, Stewart and Donald Taylor, and grandson Clayton McDowell.
