Harry David Chapman, Sr. 90 of Wellington, KS, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Sumner Regional Medical Center, Kansas.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, August 2nd at the First Presbyterian Church in Wellington, KS. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 1st at the Shelley Family Funeral Home from 9:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in his name with the First Presbyterian Church of Wellington. Contributions can be left with the Shelley Family Funeral Home 704 N. Washington, Wellington, KS 67152.
Harry David Chapman was born on October 11, 1927, the son of Wayne E. and Blanche Marie Barker (Chapman-Dool) in Tulsa, OK. He spent his youth in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he was highly involved in the sport of boxing. During his high school years, he several times achieved the title of Golden Gloves State Champion. He also served in the Civil Air Patrol during his teen years. He was a 1944 graduate from Poly Technical. Harry was united in marriage with Drusilla A. Mayes (Chapman-Pressher). Harry served his country in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1951. Harry was united in marriage with Alice May Hart on December 29, 1956 in Little Rock, AR. Harry was employed at a variety of aircraft industries throughout the country during his career as an aeronautical engineer and contractor, including McDonnell-Douglas, Boeing, and Cessna/Textron. Harry enjoyed bowling, photography, painting and collecting objects. He was a member, Trustee, and Sunday school teacher of the First Presbyterian Church in Wellington, Ks., and a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Order of the Eastern Star, and Gideons International.
Harry is survived by his daughter, Barbara White and husband Bob of Wellington, sons: Harry David Chapman, Jr. and wife LuAnn of Winfield, Michael Chapman and wife Gretchen of Newport News, VA, Daniel Chapman of Yakima, WA and John Chapman of Hudson, FL; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, step-father John O. Dool, Sr., Drusilla A Mayes (Chapman-Pressher), Alice May Hart Chapman in 1995, brother Charles Chapman, step-brother John O. Dool, Jr., step-sisters Marjorie E. Fields and Rose M. Calhoun Varner, and a son Joseph Hart Chapman.
