James Elijah Travis, 97, of Winfield was called to his home in heaven on Friday, April 5, 2019 at Medicalodges of Oxford.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. No visitation is scheduled. Memorial contributions in James’ name may be made to the VFW Post #3544, donations may be left in care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
James was born on February 3, 1922 in Hunter, Oklahoma to proud parents Bertha Maude (Johnson) and James Everett Travis. In 1942 James joined the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1944 he married the love of his life, Louise Sutton in Cairo, Georgia. He farmed for a small part of his life and worked in aircraft manufacturing at Boeing, Beechcraft, Cessna and Lear for over 40 years. He enjoyed reading his Bible, collecting arrowheads, guns and rifles; he particularly enjoyed reading about military history, general history and archeology. He was a member of the local VFW and American Legion and the NRA. James will be remembered as a happy man who loved his family.
Surviving to honor James in memory are his wife Louise Travis, daughter Lawana Gonzales and husband Bernard, son James William “Bill” Travis; grandchildren: Lori Winkle and husband Robby, Jeffery Gonzales, Roxann Sheeran and husband Michael; great-grandchildren: Lupito Fraire, Yasmeen Fraire, Lexi Winkle, Elijah Gonzales, Kylie Winkle, Isaac Sheeran, Ayden Sheeran, Collin Sheeran and Felina Gonzales. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
