Charlotte Buterbaugh Obituary

Charlotte Marie Buterbaugh, 79, of Winfield, KS passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at William Newton Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Charlotte was born on Luke Air Force base in Phoenix, AZ to parents Dr. Leon and Aletha Lyon. She was raised in Arkansas City, Kansas. There she was elected Senior Class Secretary for the graduating class of 1963. She took this role very seriously as she helped organize the class reunions every 5 years after graduation and she hand-wrote notes to each of the 200+ classmates inviting them to each reunion.

Charlotte went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University with an education degree. In her career, she taught junior high and high school physical education classes in Winfield before starting her family. After her children were both in school, along with her many volunteer positions, she worked as a substitute teacher and spent about 25 years working for the US Postal Service.

She was active in a wide spectrum of community service organizations, a few of these roles were in the Kansas Herford Association, serving as Winfield Swim Club statistician for 20 years, President of the Community Concert Association, leadership roles in the American Legion Auxiliary and its exclusive subgroup of 8 and 40, the inaugural board of the Cowley County House of Hope homeless shelter and was a Founding member of Chapter HK of PEO where she served in several offices, began the Walnut Valley reciprocity scholarship for girls attending Cottey College, as well as becoming a Golden Girl for 50 years of active membership.

Her volunteer roles through Grace Episcopal Church of Winfield were many. She served as a Lector and sang in the church choir for many years, she served terms on the vestry, directed the youth choir, was a Sunday school teacher, went as a church camp counselor to Camp Wood (when she wasn't there she sent whole watermelons in the mail to campers from the church every summer), she was the youth group leader, was a payee rep through Episcopal Social Services, attended several General Conventions as a delegate, was an active member of Daughters of the King, and had participated actively on the Kansas ECW board by holding various positions such as Devotional Chair, SW Convocation Rep, and as a delegate for ECW Triennial. She also served faithfully for many years as the ECW Church Women United Representative and served in a variety of CWU roles in that position, most notably as the President of the Kansas chapter. Through Church Women United she organized numerous salad luncheons, prayer breakfasts, and the annual Martin Luther King Day celebration.

Her family includes Jim, her husband of nearly 55 years; daughter Laura and her husband Matt, son Matthew and his wife Erin; grandchildren Kat, Noble, Ja’Cari and Sierra; and sister Janel Hutchinson. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Dr. William S. Lyon, and grandson Taylor Bradbury.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at Grace Episcopal Church. Private interment will take place at a later date. Charlotte’s family will greet friends from 5-7 PM Monday, July 15 at Grace Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Episcopal Church Outreach Fund, donations may be left in care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
