David Norris Obituary

David Carter Norris passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, with his family present to support and comfort him.  Dave was born in St. Mary’s Hospital in Winfield to Loren and Frances Norris on October 24, 1941. He grew up in Winfield and graduated in 1959 from Winfield High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and golf. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, becoming the third generation of Norris Jayhawks to do so.  After graduating from KU, Dave received an officer’s commission as an Ensign in the US Navy Supply Corps and was stationed in Athens, Georgia, and Norfolk, Virginia, before marrying his long-time sweetheart Diane Kinkaid of Oxford, KS, in 1966. Together, they enjoyed stations in Washington, D.C.; Yokosuka, Japan; New Orleans, Louisiana; Manila, The Philippines; Jacksonville, Florida;  Corpus Christi, Texas; and Kansas City, Missouri.  Dave retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1983 and started a new career as a purchasing manager for the City of Grandview, Missouri.  Dave retired for a second time in 1998, and he and Diane returned to Winfield where he became active again with Grace Episcopal Church and the Winfield Country Club. He also started D & D Tax Services, which he ran until his third retirement in 2021.

Dave was an avid golfer, and although time and age deprived him of much distance from the tee, he was deadly around the green and was known to mutter “drive for show, putt for dough” to his opponents as he collected his winnings.

He and Diane raised two sons, David (Mazama, WA) and Greg (Scott City, KS) and impressed upon them the important responsibilities of manhood and citizenship.

In addition to his wife and sons, Dave is survived by his sister Aggie Norris (Morgan), and granddaughter Meara.

A memorial service for Dave will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Grace Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the USD 465 Golf Program or Grace Episcopal Church. Donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
