Dennis Raymond Scruggs

Dennis Raymond Scruggs, 71, of Arkansas City, KS passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, June 9, 2023.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions for Dennis may be made to the Cowley County Humane Society, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Ark City.

Dennis was born May 7, 1952 in Arkansas City, KS the son of Willard Bruce Scruggs and Myrtle Scruggs Collins. He graduated from Ark City High School in 1970 and received a bachelor's degree from WSU in 1974. On December 23, 1983 Dennis was united in marriage to Jorita Wells at the Ark City Presbyterian Church. He worked at Rodeo Meats and then at Westar as a meter reader for 27 years.

Dennis was a talented musician and loved singing country and gospel music. He refurbished guitars, played the guitar, banjo, and mandolin, and anything with strings. He enjoyed pumping iron and even boxed in his younger years. He was known to have a warped sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. Many of his children’s friends considered Dennis to be a second dad.

Survivors include his wife Jorita Scruggs, son Kevin Scruggs, and daughter Sarah Scruggs, and sisters Brenda Welton (Ted), Sharon Pummel (Glen), and Vicki Gressel (Dorsey). Dennis is preceded in death by his parents.
