Donald McCann Obituary

Donald “Don” Leroy McCann, 87, of Arkansas City, KS, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the Winfield Veterans Home.

Memorial services with military honors will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, in Winfield, KS. Memorial contributions in Donald’s name may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation; donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home.

Don was born on May 22, 1938, in Ottawa, KS, to parents Harvey & Florence McCann. He went to school in Ottawa and at high school in Pomona, KS. He was enrolled at Emporia State College and also took college courses during his 20 years in the United States Air Force, in which he toured Vietnam twice as a bomb engineer. Once Don retired from the Air Force, he finished his education and received a bachelor's degree. Don worked as a graphics illustrator for the Pentagon, drawing for President Reagan. After, he taught at the St. John’s Military Academy for 10 years, then 10 years at the Belle Plaine school, teaching art, photography. Don worked in the computer lab, led the Cotton Scouts, and coached cross country. In 1978, in Miami, OK, he married the love of his life, Paula Sullivan. In his free time, Don loved to run. So much, that he finished 5 marathons. During his jogs, he always listened to audiobook tapes. He enjoyed doing puzzles, crosswords, sudoku, and reading. He was a loving husband, gentle father, and adoring grandpa.

Don is survived by his wife, daughters Vicki Moore (Brian) of Ottawa, KS, Diane Kisner (Bob) of Wichita, KS, Sheri Huelsman (Bruce) of Wichita, KS, Nichole Whyte of Arkansas City, KS, and Angela McCann of Arkansas City, KS, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Terri McCann, and siblings.
