Dorcas Denise (Shockley) Calvert, 102, of Corona del Mar, California, passed peacefully into eternal life on February 27, 2026.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at First United Methodist Church, 1000 Millington Street, Winfield, Kansas. Graveside services will follow at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. The family welcomes cards and condolences, which may be left in care of Shelley Family Funeral Home, Winfield, KS.
Dorcas was born in Lucas, Kansas, to Erwin Ambrose Shockley and Ula (Urie) Shockley. She graduated from Lebo High School and earned her degree from Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) in Emporia in 1943. She began her career teaching kindergarten in Paola, Kansas, where her natural love for children shone brightly.
A gifted dancer and teacher, Dorcas opened her own dance studio, sharing her passion for ballet, jazz, and tap with young students and inspiring a lifelong appreciation for movement and grace in many.
In 1944, she married the love of her life, Carl Calvert. Following World War II, the couple started their family and settled in Augusta, Kansas, to raise their sons. Later, Dorcas brought her creative flair and warm personality to Calvert’s Department Store, assisting customers with fabrics, fashion, and personalized style advice.
In 1992, Dorcas and Carl settled in Winfield, Kansas where they enjoyed their retirement.
An active member of Soroptimist International, and Epsilon Sigma Alpha. She was dedicated to empowering women and communities. Dorcas cherished crafting, dancing, time with friends, and especially moments shared with family.
In 2012, she relocated to Corona del Mar, California, to be near her daughter, where she enjoyed her later years surrounded by love, sunshine, and close family.
Dorcas is survived by her son, Chris Calvert (Patricia); her daughter, Janine Carney (Tom); grandchildren Christy Calvert and Lee Calvert; and great-granddaughter Alicia Calvert.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Carl; and her son, Keith Calvert.
Dorcas lived a century marked by kindness, creativity, and devotion to family and children. Her legacy of joy, compassion and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
