Howard "Doug" Douglas Talley

Howard “Doug” Douglas Talley, 83, of Arkansas City, KS, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the Kansas Veteran’s Home in Winfield, KS. 

Howard was born and raised in Smyth County, Virginia, North Holston and Chilhowie, Virginia.   He attended grammar and high school at Chilhowie, Virginia.   He got his GED while he was in the United States Navy.  Howard served 20 years from August of 1956 to March of 1976 in the United States Navy where he was a Seabee.   He retired as a E6 or 1st Class petty officer equipment operator.    He married Elvira Cassimore on August 9, 1959 in Branchville, New Jersey.  He has lived in several places including, Dodge City, KS; Port Hueneme, CA; Newton, NJ; Midway Island; Davis, RI; Dover, NJ and finally calling Arkansas City, Home.  He worked after retiring from the military as an over the road coast to coast truck driver for 30 plus years.    He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and VFW Post 1254 of Arkansas City.   He enjoyed fishing, traveling and bluegrass music.  He and his wife travelled to several bluegrass festivals before their health declined.   He also enjoyed his paper delivery route in Geuda Springs and South Haven.   Howard loved to socialize with all his friends at the Veteran’s home and was an excellent cook.  

He is survived by his daughters, Tina Marie Talley of Arkansas City and Tracey Lee Talley of South Carolina and his sister Pat Papp of New Jersey.   He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Elvira; one son, Bryan Douglas Talley; 3 brothers, Robert, Dewey and James Talley and one sister, Rose McDavitty.   

Cremation will take place and the family will hold services at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, November 6th, 2020 at Trinity Baptist Church following with burial of the cremains at Parker Cemetery.
