Janice Kathleen Cox Rothlauf, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away on July 27, 2024 at the age of 81. She was born on May 14, 1943, in the St. Frances Hospital in Wichita, Kansas and was the daughter of Asa and Doris Elder Cox.
Janice was raised near Belle Plaine, Kansas. She attended the Valley Home one-room Grade School, lived in rural homes with no indoor plumbing and had a “party-line” telephone. In 7th grade, Janice joined the 4-H Club and began her long-time hobby of sewing. She attended Belle Plaine High School and played the French Horn in the band. In 1960 she graduated and then she attended the Kansas State Teacher’s College, in Emporia. She graduated from college in 1964, with a Business Degree and major in accounting. From there, Janice went to Washington, D.C., and worked her career for the U.S. Government Accountability Office performing auditing services.
Janice lived many years in Silver Spring, Maryland, and became active in various hobbies and interests. For two years, she sang in the soprano section of the International Women’s barbershop harmony group, Sweet Adelines Washington D.C. chapter. Using her many artistic abilities, she was an accomplished quilter and seamstress, making beautiful quilts and most of her own clothes for many years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and embroidery. She and her mother, who lived with her for 16 years, were members of the Air Capital Carnival Glass Club. They enjoyed going to auctions and building their beautiful collection of glass. Janice also enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States, including visiting all 50 states, and she vacationed in some foreign countries.
In 2005, Janice relocated to Leavenworth, KS, where she lived the remaining years. She belonged to in the Sunflower Quilt Guild and enjoyed making quilts for charity donations. She has always loved Cats and had one as her pet most of her life. In fact, some of her quilts and wall hangings had a cat included, if you look closely. She loved to read and always had books on her bedside and coffee tables that she was enjoying.
An infant sister, Judith Ann, and her parents, Asa and Doris, preceded her in death. Survivors include cousins.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield, KS.
