Karen Snell Obituary

Karen Elaine Snell, born on February 27, 1946, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Winfield, KS, to Margaret Snell (Drauden) and Walter Byron Snell, departed this world on December 10, 2023 after a brief illness.

Her entire life was spent in Winfield, KS, where she attended Holy Name Catholic School from 1953 to 1960 and later graduated from Winfield High School in 1964. Karen’s love of people led her to a career at Winfield State Hospital (The Hill) in 1965. She worked there until its closure in 1998. Thereafter, she took on a case management role with Creative Community Living (CCL), serving with commitment until her well-deserved retirement.

Karen was preceded in death by her loving parents, Margaret and Walter Snell, brother Alfred and his wife Cathy, brother Virgil, sister Janet Hoheisel and her husband Henry, sister-in-law Ann Snell, niece Cathi Maynard Snell, niece Janice Schlicting, and nephew Randy Hoheisel. She is survived by her brother Wendell of Ohio, and her sister-in-law Jane Snell of Lenexa, KS.

Karen leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, embraced by a multitude of nieces and nephews. Alfred’s children -- Dan, Donna, Tim, Brian, and Kevin; Virgil’s children -- Mari, Lori, Rhonda, Patricia, and Walter; Janet’s children -- Debby, Bob, Brad, Diane and Deriece; and Wendell’s children -- Duane, Cheryl, and Beth.

Karen also leaves behind her beloved special family, Jerald and Jimalene Cales and their children – Debi, Jill, Eric and Goddaughter, Bethany. They and the holidays they shared will always hold a special place in her heart. Claudine Halbert, her special cousin, of Winfield, also survives.

Karen had a deep affection for her family and friends, offering prayers and support during both celebratory and challenging times. We love her so.

Look for Karen’s spirit in the fluttering wings of cardinals and the gobble of turkeys, reminding us of her enduring love and presence. May she rest in eternal peace.
