Kevin Coon Obituary

Kevin L. Coon, 60, of Winfield, KS passed away Monday, November 15, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center of Wichita.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 22, 2021 at Central Baptist Church in Winfield. Graveside services will follow at New Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-5 PM Sunday, November 21 at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield. Memorial contributions in Kevin’s name may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, donations may be left in the care of the funeral home.

Kevin was born on June 22, 1961, in Kingman, KS to parents Leon and Velma (Hensley) Coon. When Kevin was two the family moved to Winfield. Kevin graduated from Winfield High School in 1979 and continued his education at Cowley County Community College on a football scholarship. After attending Cowley, Kevin played football for Southwestern College for two years while gaining a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. While still in college, Kevin started running Coon Concrete and Construction with his father, they were involved in constructing many of the buildings around Winfield and he was very proud of the construction he did on the Vietnam War Memorial in Winfield.

Kevin was an entrepreneur and opened KC’s Junction in 1982, KC’s Pawn in 1994, and Kevin Coon Bail Bonds in 2000. In 1998 Kevin and Carol Coon started running A to Z Mini Storages and shortly after took on many rentals. On October 15, 1994 Kevin was united to the love of his life, Carol Rowley. Kevin and Carol loved going to the lake house in Branson together, taking the church youth group on trips, and going boating. He loved spending time on their farm, working livestock, and playing poker. Kevin was a member of Hackney Baptist Church. He was generous in many ways, including starting the AA house in Winfield, of which he was a member for over 34 years. Kevin loved going to sporting events, especially football games and he helped fund many programs and teams over the years. He enjoyed spoiling kids and blessing friends and strangers with random acts of kindness.

Kevin is survived by his wife Carol Coon, his son Zac Coon, and daughter Amancha Coon, sister Veronia Steele, aunts Donna Thompson (Barry), Nancy Allard, and Beverly Samms (Wess), father and mother-in-law Gordon and Kathy Rowley, nieces and nephews Dustin Fulk, Austin Fulk and Cassie Cobb. He is also survived by numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kevin is preceded in death by his parents and brother Craig Coon, grandparents Earl and Evelynn Coon and Ernest and Bonnie Hensley.
