Lawrence Rood Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Harold Rood, 89, of Winfield passed away Friday, December 11, 2020.

Larry was born April 20, 1931 in Wichita, KS, the son of Harold and Mary Rood. He graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science and Agriculture in 1953. It was there he met his wife of 45 years, Patricia Coad, who he married in 1954. After Larry’s honorable discharge from the Army in 1956, he and Pat eventually made their home in Winfield where they owned and operated Coad Candy Company from 1960-1996 and raised their family. Larry proudly volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 40+ years, was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield, and helped build over twenty houses for Habitat for Humanity. Larry enjoyed traveling by RV, boating, woodworking, and most of all spending time with his family.

He is survived by sons Kevin Rood and wife Carol, Dan Rood and wife Sheryl, brother George Rood and wife Paula, sister Mary Helen Billiard, dear friend Judy Bink, and grandchildren: Lauren Hanson and husband Deryk, Garrett Rood and wife Amy, Devin Rood, Kristina Schuler and husband Steven, Ashley Hail and husband Braden, Melissa Lowry and husband Donny; and great-grandchildren: Drayke, Riley, Van, Olivia, and Adalyn. Lawrence is preceded in death by his wife Patricia and his parents.

Due to concerns of spreading COVID among Larry’s family and friends, a family-only service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2020 at the First Baptist Church of Winfield. All are welcome to watch the live-streamed service on the church’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/133848460003248. A public graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2020 at Highland Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20, 2020 at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield at 803 Loomis St., Winfield, KS 67156. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Winfield, Legacy Community Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity.
