Leland Kaufman M.D. Obituary

Leland R. Kaufman M.D., 88, formerly of Winfield, KS, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2021 at Pine Village in Moundridge, KS.

Private burial will take place at a later date at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee; contributions may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.

Leland was born August 18, 1933 in Moundridge, KS to parents Christian and Lydia (Flickner) Kaufman. He was raised on their family farm and educated in the Moundridge school district.  He attended Bethel College and earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. While attending Bethel, Leland was united in marriage to the love of his life, Katherine Joan Harder, in 1953. The couple lived brief stints in Denver, North Newton, Lawrence and Kansas City in the late ’50s and early '60s while Leland finished his undergraduate and medical school degrees.  In 1962 they moved to Winfield where Leland started his family practice.  Leland was a primary care and OB physician in Winfield for 31 years before retiring in 1993. He spent the bulk of this retirement on his family ranch.

Leland and Joan raised their 5 children (not an easy task!) and became active in the Winfield community in a variety of ways. Leland enjoyed his role as team doctor for the football and basketball teams at both Winfield High School and Southwestern College. His love for sports originated when he played both football and basketball at Moundridge High School and Bethel College. Leland was an avid University of Kansas football fan attending most home games for many years.  Leland also was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church Choir, singing most every Sunday morning during worship service. And Leland enjoyed his daily exercise as he could be seen jogging and walking all over Winfield for most of his working life, and after moving to his ranch Leland continued his walking and enjoyed ranch maintenance activities. Throughout his life Leland enjoyed swimming in his pool, reading books and the newspaper, and listening to music.  Most of all, Leland was a family man, devoted to providing for his family and enjoying family time throughout his life. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his 15 grandchildren. In his final years, Leland was afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease that took his mind but certainly not his soul.

Leland is survived by his children: Tony Kaufman (Rene) of Lawrence, Kathy Martin (Michael) of Chanute; Patrick Kaufman (Kathleen) of Overland Park, daughters-in-law Pam (Coyne) Kaufman of Burden, and Jane (Liermann) Kaufman of Winfield;  grandchildren: John Kaufman (Kiersten), Caroline Golay (Nathan), Alex Doyle (James), Annie Kaufman, Jake Kaufman, Jennifer Kaufman, Jessica Kearney (Tim), Sydney Kaufman, David Martin (Katie), Jack Martin, Katie Martin, Brian Kaufman, Emily Kaufman, Christian Kaufman, and Olivia Kaufman;  great-grandchildren: Jett Kaufman, Liam Doyle, Christian Kaufman, Laken Doyle, Demi Golay, and Landon Martin;  brothers Howard Kaufman (Neva) and Delmer Kaufman (Ann) of Moundridge. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Katherine Joan Kaufman, sons Christian and David Kaufman, sister Ethel Helmer and brother Virgil Kaufman.
