Marjorie Carolyn (Lewis) Abel, 94, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2020 at her home in Winfield.
Private graveside services will be held at Wilmot Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Marjorie may be made to the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be left in care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
Marjorie was born in rural Cowley County, Kansas near Atlanta April 7, 1926 the daughter of LeRoy Earl Lewis and Mary (Stuber) Lewis. She grew up in the Winfield area and graduated from Winfield High School in 1944. After graduating, Marjorie was united in marriage to Joe E. Collins, they had a son Bill, after the couple divorced Marjorie was a dedicated single mother. In 1977 she married Gene Abel and they spent many happy years together, he preceded her in death in 2015. Marjorie had a strong work ethic and began working at Boeing right out of high school, she started on the shop floor and retired as a department supervisor working side by side with her husband 40 years later. Marjorie was known for being independent and having a sense of humor, she was also a self-proclaimed homebody and loved living in the country on the family homestead. Her favorite hobby was being outside gardening, she was particularly proud of her iris and tomato plants. She was avid in 4-H as a kid and loved to enter her flowers into the county fair even as an adult. Marjorie had a green thumb and could grow anything.
Survivors include her granddaughter Erika Collins Sterling and husband Jeremy, and brother Dee Lewis and wife Edna, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and beloved friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, son William “Bill” Collins, brothers Walter Henry Lewis, Dan Lewis and Alan Lewis, sisters Barbara Joan Lewis, Betty Bourne, and Katherine Taylor.
