Maurine Hogue Obituary

Maurine Elizabeth Hogue, 87, of Winfield, KS passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, August 5, 2024 at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship in Winfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cumbernauld Village Employee Education Fund; donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.

Maurine was born on July 12, 1937 in Nashville, KS to parents Cecil and Frances (Woolard) Zeigler. Her father was a United Methodist Pastor, and their family moved several times during her youth. Maurine graduated from Haviland High School in 1955 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in public school music at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS in 1960. It was at Southwestern where she met the love of her life, Lester A. Hogue. They were united in marriage by Maurine’s father in Florence, KS on August 18, 1957. Les proudly called his wife by a number of endearing names, such as “my redhead” and he often introduced them as “Maur and Les”.

Maurine attended Grace United Methodist Church beginning in college and was a member of the church for over 60 years. In the early years, she served as church secretary, and sang in the choir for many years. A beautiful vocalist, Maurine worked as a vocal instructor for many years before starting her career at the Winfield Daily Courier, where she was the city editor for 17 years. Following her career at the Courier, she worked for the Winfield Police Department as a dispatcher for 10 years. Maurine was a professional photographer and took photos for law enforcement agencies, newspapers and, in her free time, together with good friend Billie Wells, used her talents to photograph auto racing events. Additionally, she used her journalism talents and wrote articles, for a number of years, for the Kansas State Trooper Magazine.

Maurine loved many things: classical music and attending the opera with her husband, her Squat and Gobble group, playing family games (including Scrabble, crosswords, and card games), baking bread, her beloved pets, her many houseplants, and most of all, her family, especially her grandchildren, who knew her as Granna Renie. A wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and confidant, Maurine was dearly loved and will be missed for her sense of humor and orneriness, loving support and wisdom, generosity, home-cooking and baked goods, singing voice (especially when she sang with Les), late night phone conversations with loved ones, a smile that lit up her face and a room, and the way she threw her arms out and gave a look that said “come give me a hug”.

Survivors include her sons, Brent Hogue, of Winfield, Mark Hogue and wife, Sue, of Peoria, AZ, and Lynn Hogue, and wife, Sula, of Lawrence, KS, her daughter, Sharilyn (Hogue) Hill, of Hutchinson, KS, and Mark Hill, of Columbus, GA; her brother Troy Zeigler; sister Cecile Joy Zeigler; her grandchildren, BreAnnah Newman (Wes), Madeline Hogue (Ivan), Derek Hogue, Hunter Hogue, Jess Hogue, Erin (Hill) Chadwick (Trevor), Lucas Hill, and Alex Hill (Carlin); and her great-grandchildren, Lilah Newman, Olivia Bain, Ellie and Emmalyn Chadwick, and Noa Hill. Maurine was preceded in death by her beloved husband and parents.
