Michael Ray Swinney

Michael Ray Swinney, 65, of Winfield, KS passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital.

Michael was born in Arkansas City, KS on May 16, 1957. He graduated from Washburn University with a master’s degree and worked as a psychotherapist. Michael lived most of his life in Topeka and Cedar Vale, KS, and as a child he lived in Japan while his father was in the military. He was very involved in politics and served as the head of the Cowley County democratic party and worked on the campaign for Nancy Kassebaum, the first woman to represent Kansas in the Senate. He also enjoyed shooting pool with his friends.

Survivors include his daughter Jessica Swinney and her brother Jeremy Mount, former spouse Donna Edwards, grandchildren Gabriel Scott and Adryan Swinney, and great-grandchildren Rachel and Jeremiah. Michael is preceded in death by his mother Wilma Junelle Bartholomew, stepfather Joe Feely, and brothers James and David.

Cremation will take place and private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions for Michael may be made to the Cowley County Humane Society, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
