Nellie "Louise" Travis Obituary

Nellie “Louise” Travis, 101, of Winfield, KS passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

 Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at the Shelley Family Funeral Home in Winfield, burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. No visitation is scheduled. Memorial contributions for Louise may be made to the VFW Post #3544, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.

 Louise was born March 26, 1921, in Lexington, Georgia. She was raised by her adopted family in Oglethorpe County, GA.  After graduating from high school in Cairo, Georgia, she was employed by the agricultural adjustment administration (peanut, cotton, tobacco, crop management, acreage management, etc.).  Louise also volunteered to help the war effort by packaging medical supplies sent overseas during World War II. She met the love of her life, James Travis, at a USO dance. They married on October 6, 1944, in Cairo, GA. She was an avid musician and loved singing and playing guitar. She was a band member of the Sunflower Troubadours for many years. Louise worked for many years as a Diet Writer for William Newton Memorial Hospital, in Winfield Kansas. Louise enjoyed doing arts and crafts, flower gardening and was a long-time member of the local VFW.

 Louise is survived by her daughter Lawana Gonzales and husband Bernard (Rose Hill, Kansas), son James William “Bill” Travis (Winfield, Kansas); grandchildren: Lori (Gonzales) Winkle and husband Robert (Derby, Kansas), Jeffery Gonzales (Wichita, Kansas), Roxann (Gonzales) Sheeran and husband Michael (Andover, Kansas); great-grandchildren: Lupito Fraire, Yasmeen Fraire, Lexi Winkle, Elijah Gonzales, Kylie Winkle, Isaac Sheeran, Ayden Sheeran, Collin Sheeran and Felina Gonzales. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Lillie Sutton, and husband, James Elijah Travis.
