Richard was born in Winfield, KS on November 24, 1930 the son of Clyde and Iva (Brandon) Tredway. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1948 and began attending Southwestern College. Richard later joined the United States Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. After Richard’s honorable discharge from the Army, he attended Kansas State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Education in 1956 and his Masters in 1959.

For Richard, teaching was a calling, not a job. He began a 39-year life of service in education, starting at Oxford High School, then Winfield High School, and last at Cowley County Community College (CCCC) where he served as Department Head Chairman, Business and Service Department and Agriculture Program Instructor; he also served as Chairman of the North Central Association Accreditation at CCCC. In 1992, Richard received a Master Teacher Award from the Institute for Staff Development and Organizational Development in Austin, TX. Richard was most proud when his students became successful not only in their field of study but also in their life.

In February 1956 he married the love of his life, Nancy Elliott in Winfield, KS. Together they raised their two daughters, Susan and Linda in Winfield. In both Oxford and Winfield, Richard and Nancy made friends for life. Together they traveled to fourteen countries including trips with family, friends and the K-State Alumni Association. Each of Richard’s grandchildren has fond memories of fishing on Grouse Creek, skeet shooting at the farm and learning about the Kansas prairie and wildlife.

Richard enjoyed woodworking, hunting in the Flint Hills near Grouse Creek, fly-fishing with his brother and skiing with his daughters in Colorado.  In retirement, he served on the Winfield Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors, and assisted with the construction of fourteen homes. He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and was active on many committees.

Richard was a devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters Susan Jones (Jay) of Fountain Hills AZ and Linda Besler (Steve Piel) of Jackson, WY; grandchildren Emily Scott (Brett) of Dallas TX, Austin Jones (Khloe) of Mesa AZ, Lynsey Schlegel (Nick) of Salt Lake City UT, Erica Hunsicker (Chad) of Lawrence KS; Taylor Rich Jones (Dallas) of Scottsdale AZ, and Adrienne Houlehan (Patrick) Overland Park KS; and 13 great-grandchildren: Eleanor, Abigail and Olivia Scott; Jackson, Wyatt, Ryder and Parker Jones; Henry and Lily Schlegel; Everly and Chase Hunsicker; Grayson and Beckett Jones. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Daniel Tredway (Nancy).
