Robert Ellis “Bob” Sherrard, 88, long time Winfield resident, died Sunday, April 25, 2021, peacefully at his home with family and friends by his side.
Graveside services for family and friends to attend will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00- 7:00 pm, Friday, April 30, 2021, at Shelley Family Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 4:00 - 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made on Bob’s behalf to the First Presbyterian Church Community Outreach, First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Millington St, Winfield, KS 67156, or K&O Steam and Gas Engine Club. Contributions may be left in care of the funeral home.
Bob was born June 8, 1932, at home in Udall, Kansas, to Fern Bernice (Kennedy) and John Ellis Sherrard. He grew up in the Udall-Winfield area. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1949 where he was involved in shop class and worked masonry during his high school years.
On March 22, 1952, Bob married Elizabeth Joy “Betty” Moore, his high school sweetheart and business partner.
Bob began his career as a young boy working side by side with his dad in farming and masonry. Bob was a mason, plumber, welder, electrician, and carpenter. He began a carpentry business which became successful. This allowed him and Betty to form Bob Sherrard Builders in 1966, on 7th & Andrews St. in Winfield. Later moving the business to Hwy 160 East, across from the high school. Betty was the bookkeeper for the business. They both retired in 1988. Bob Sherrard Builders was licensed for residential and light commercial building. Bob built and remodeled not only homes but schools, banks, and commercial businesses in Winfield and the surrounding communities.
Bob was a 50-plus year member in the First Presbyterian Church sitting in the North Forty with other farming families from the former Walnut Valley Church when it combined with the First Presbyterian Church. He was involved in the Udall community, the Udall Chapter of Oddfellows, Winfield Rotary Club, 4-H Judge and Sponsor, and First Presbyterian Church Trustee.
Bob was an active member of the K&O Steam and Gas Engine Club and was honored with an induction to the Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association Hall of Fame.
Bob, known as Bobby by his grandkids always said his greatest joy in life was his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents Fern and Ellis Sherrard, and his sister Martha Jean Conrod.
Survivors include daughters Diana Sherrard and Cathe Brennan and husband, Alan, all of Winfield, and Linda Adam and husband Doug, Carlsbad, CA; cherished grandchildren Michael Long and wife Karen, Newport Beach, CA, Andrew Brennan and wife Jennifer, Newburgh, IN, Amy Long, Newport Beach, CA, Ethan Brennan and Sarah Brill, Wichita, KS, Olivia Adam, Conroe, TX, Cassidae Brennan, Stillwater, OK, and Christian Adam, San Diego, CA; and great-grandchildren Graham and Caroline Brennan, Newburgh, IN.
