Stanley Schwartz Obituary

Stanley Ray Schwartz, of Arkansas City, KS, passed away on Saturday, December 19th, 2020 at William Newton Hospital of Winfield, KS.  Stan was 69 years of age.

Stan was born on July 14, 1951, in Arkansas City, the son of Ralph E. and Delma (Hestand) Schwartz.

Measuring in at 6ft5in with his signature shoulder length, eventually snow white, hair Stan was often referred to as a gentle giant and can be remembered having to duck to enter a doorway. Stan attended Arkansas City High School. He was on the varsity basketball team and graduated in 1969. Following graduation Stan was united in marriage with Mayleene Sterling on December 25th, 1970. They had four children, Janis, Barrett, Jason, and Brian. During the 80’s Stan volunteered as a basketball coach for Little League Basketball. He touched many lives through coaching and sharing his passion and knowledge of the game. An unquestionable hard worker with a green thumb Stan was well known for his 26 acre garden he and his family tended to for over 5 years. Stan was a true family man who made it a point to attend almost every sporting event his children participated in. He made his presence at these games well known as he was opinionated and powerfully enthusiastic.  Though Stan was a man of many trades and an entrepreneur, in the early 2000s he retired as a bull hauler from Butler Trucking LLC of Newkirk, Ok. During his 20 plus years as a truck driver Stan earned the nickname, Hippie, and was well known in the industry. Stan was also fondly referred to as “Stan the Man.” He was known for being generous and willing to help anyone. Well known as a memorable storyteller Stan had a true way with words. Even though he had a very straightforward, and often gruff way of sharing his thoughts and anecdotes Stan is remembered as a witty jokester who loved to tell a tale. One does not earn a nickname like “Stan the Man,” without living a good, memorable life. Stan was truly one of a kind.

His surviving family includes his wife, Mayleene of the home, his children, Janis E. Shaw of Arkansas City, Barrett A. Schwartz of Arkansas City, Jason A. Schwartz and wife Josi of Arkansas City and Brian E. Schwartz and wife Jennifer of O’Fallon, MO; his brother, Ralph B Schwartz of Plano, TX, his nephew Scott Schwartz and and his wife Liz, his niece Keri Schwartz and niece Brandi Sletcha and her husband Scott; his 12 grandchildren, Geoffrey Schwartz, Krista Cohrs, Brogan Schwartz, Mason Schwartz, Rylynn Schwartz, Brilee Schwartz, Bryson Schwartz, Jarrett Schwartz, Austin Schwartz, Brecken Schwartz, Emma Schwartz and Korbin Schwartz and 6 great-grandchildren, Ivy, Blaze, Piper, Dantè, Axle and Bentley.

12:00 noon on December 22, 2020 at Hope Cemetery southwest of Arkansas City, Stan has requested a closed casket, graveside burial with family and friends.  Please follow social distancing guidelines when attending service.  Shelley Family Funeral of Arkansas City is in charge of arrangements.
