William Sheldon Obituary

William “Bill’ Sheldon, 88, of Arkansas City, KS passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at home, surrounded by his family.

Private services are scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arkansas City Senior Citizens Center at 320 N. A. St. in Arkansas City KS 67005, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home.

Bill was born March 18, 1933 in Coffeyville, KS to parents Clarence and Irene (Chopman) Sheldon. Bill graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1951, after graduating he served in the U.S. Army from July 1953 to January 1955. Bill was united in marriage to JoAnn Hunt on April 20, 1957 in Hackney, KS the couple then moved to Okmulgee, OK where he attended Oklahoma State University for 2 years taking Tech courses. They later moved back to Ark City and Bill opened Sheldon’s Service Station, and in 1975 he started Sheldon’s Pawn Shop, he later incorporated Sheldon’s Buy Sell & Trade and Sheldon’s Real Estate into that business. Bill was an entrepreneur and enjoyed working on his rental properties and mowing. Bill loved teaching others and being involved in the community, he went to The Coffee Break twice a day to discuss everything in Ark City with his coffee group. He liked to joke “I went to grade school across from the pawnshop, so I guess I never made it very far in life.”

Survivors include his wife JoAnn, children Craig W. Sheldon and wife Rhonda, Arlen H. Sheldon and wife Angela; four grandchildren and siblings: Juanita March, Tom Sheldon, and Barbara Sheldon. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Pat and her husband Bob Lawson, and brother-in-law Richard March.
